Our History

OUR History

The Delta Chi Fraternity was chartered in 1971 at the Central Missouri State College which later became Central Missouri State University and as of recent years, The University of Central Missouri. Initially we were known as the Missouri Colony in 1968 under the guidance of the University of Missouri at Kansas City or UMKC.

Back in 1978 we decided to start a annual Float Trip of both active and alumni members to perpetuate the meaning of the Bond of Delta Chi as a life long commitment and a way of showing the active members that the end of college life, wasn’t the end of Delta Chi. The gathering each summer started out small but grew over time to more than 100 brothers. Besides floating, eating, drinking beer, play cards and sometimes being out of control, we actually got serious about life and the future of our Chapter. With this came the thought of an annual auction at the float trip that would help support our other events throughout the year. Since, an annual Alumni dues wasn’t providing the funds needed to sustain our events like the Alumni Rush BBQ, Float Trip, Homecoming Gathering and our Leadership Training Retreat each year.

As the Chapter developed and grew over the years under the guidance of the ABT (Alumni Board of Trustees), BB (Chapter Advisor) and Chapter Executives our alumni membership also expanded in numbers and age. As college prices continued to rise, the Alumni realized that some of our active members needed help with school expenses. So in the early 2000’s, we started the Delta Chi Endowment at UCM with a goal of a small scholarship using investment fund gains, to be given out to an Active member/s which still continues to this day. With the efforts of many alumni over a relative short period this fund holds over $45,000 today. These funds can only be used at the University and is under the control of the university at the direction of the Chapter, as long as we are active on the campus. Should we fail, then all funds become part of the Universities General Endowment. This didn’t set well with many Alumni, as the university hasn’t always had a positive attitude toward Greek life.

In 2004, one of our alumni brothers passed unexpectedly leaving behind a daughter getting ready to head to college. We were all shocked at his passing and wanted to show our support but she wasn’t planning on attending CMSU. So, a suggestion was made to start another Scholarship to help any child of college age whose father had passed. Out of this float trip conversation, we developed the Fallen Brothers Fund. The source of income was to be from donations and proceeds of the float trip auction each year and the ABT Board and Fund director would be in control. This scholarship and amount to be awarded was voted and approved at the Alumni meeting at the float trip each year, once the fund director advised attendees of the need. Each scholarship given by the Fallen Brothers Fund is for only four years or until the child completes his or her course of education. This educational scholarship starts after high school and can be at any college, university, trade school or institution approved by the Board. Each recipient must be a direct descendent of a UCM Delta Chi fallen brother. Each recipient will be provided a Counselor from the Alumni Membership to assist him/her and the mother or guardian throughout the process and duration of the scholarship award. Our first scholarship was given in 2004 and to date we have provided more than $62,000 in scholarships, effecting children’s lives. Thus, showing the Love and Commitment we have for each of our brothers of the Bond.

It had been considered for years starting back in the late nineties that the ABT whose primary duty was to oversee the Active Chapter and its operations should be split into various organizations. In 2013, through one of our longtime brothers the Alumni Board was bequeathed over $100,000 dollars. This set in a savings account for several years until we realized it needed to be invested and put to good use. We also realized the ABT needed to be split into several organizations due to legal reasons etc. After several years of hard work, we now have three entities aliened with the UCM Chapter and its Alumni. They are:

ABT: (Alumni Board of Trustees) the original organization established when the colony was chartered by Delta Chi National. Whose duties totally revolve around the activities and support of the Active Chapter at UCM. The ABT has its own By-Laws and guidelines as established by the National Delta Chi Fraternity. Its support comes from National as well as donations from the Chapter, Alumni Members, Kimball Endowment and Three Fires Association depending on the later two’s By-Laws and Boards.

Three Fires Alumni Association of Central Missouri, Inc.: (TIN# 83-4467492) Established in 2022, this 501(C7) non profit was setup to provide non- educational support activities for the Alumni and Active members of the Chapter at UCM. This organization has it’s own By-Laws and board which controls its day to day activates. Its main support provides for the Alumni BBQ and Float Trip. It also has it own bank account which is funded via donations and Alumni dues. Donations to this organization are not tax deductable per the IRS.

The Kimball Endowment of Central Missouri Inc.: (TIN# 83-4467672)

This 501(c3) organization was also established in 2022 and is a non-profit which controls both the UCM Delta Chi Endowment and the Fallen Brothers Scholarship Fund. It derives its funding via tax deferred donations of gifts, RMD’s, Trusts bequeaths, QCD’s, equity gifts and proceeds from the Alumni Float Trip Auction. Besides providing Scholarships to children of fallen brothers we hope over time, with growth to be able to assist with the UCM Scholarships. Our other goal is to support the Chapter with educational funds requests and educational trips such as the Delta Chi Convention and Leadership Academy. This organization also has its own By-Laws and Board for governing its accountability. It currently has operating funds near $130,000 dollars of which we only use the capital gains of the investments in order to provide educational needs. We currently have two children on scholarship with an additional four more in the near future as of 2024.

On behalf of all of your Brothers and Alumni of the Central Missouri Chapter we want to thank you for your Past and the Future support. Please think of us when you’re planning your economical futures, as we must all do. Always consult a professional when making financial decisions. Remember, we are investing not only in Delta Chi but the Future. We look forward to seeing you at the Burg or other Delta Chi events as we continue this journey through Life and the Bond of Delta Chi.
